MGen Oberwarth enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in June of 1994. Upon graduation from The Royal Military College, with a degree in Military and Strategic Studies, he was commissioned as an officer in The Royal Canadian Regiment.
MGen Oberwarth has served with the Second and Third Battalions of The Royal Canadian Regiment and has seen deployments to the former Yugoslavia as a Rifle Platoon Commander, East Africa as a Recce Platoon Commander, and twice to Afghanistan, where he served first as a Company 2IC in Kabul, and later as a Combat Team Commander in the Panjwaii District of Kandahar. He also spent a year in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) as the Deputy-Chief of Staff Operations and Plans.
His key staff experiences include service with the Canadian Army HQ as the Business Planner and the Strategic Joint Staff as Director General Operations. He has also had the pleasure to serve two years with the United States Army as the Deputy Command General – Operations of America’s First Corps (I Corps).
His senior command tours include command of the Infantry School and the Combat Training Centre. Most recently, Brigadier-General Oberwarth was Commander 4th Canadian Division and Joint Task Force Central in Ontario. He assumed duties as Chief of Staff of Digital Services Group (DSG) in August 2025.
MGen Oberwarth is a graduate of the Joint Command and Staff Programme and the National Security Programme. He holds a Masters of Defence Studies.
